Wi-Fi and app
A wireless link to a phone app for live viewing, downloading videos, changing settings and updating the device's software.
What it means
Many thermal and digital night vision units have built-in Wi-Fi that connects to the maker’s phone app. Depending on the model, the app can:
- Stream the live picture to your phone or tablet.
- Download photos and videos from the device.
- Change settings, reticles and ballistic data.
- Install software updates that fix bugs or add features.
What it changes in the field
Streaming lets a partner watch on a phone while you scan, which helps when you hunt as a pair, or when you are teaching a new hunter what to look for. It can also make filming easier. Software updates can improve a device after you buy it.
Owners report mixed results with apps: streams that freeze, dropped connections, and sound that drifts out of sync with the video. Wi-Fi also uses battery power. Many hunters leave it off until they need it.
What to look for
- Whether the app is maintained, with recent updates, and works on your phone.
- Owner reports of streaming reliability, if you plan to use it.
- Whether the device can do everything you need without the app. Some settings or features may be app-only.
- A clear way to turn Wi-Fi off in the field.
How we use it on this site
We show yes or no, from the maker’s specs. It is not scored, because a Wi-Fi checkbox says nothing about whether the app works well.
